Spring Break

Contrary to popular belief, Spring Break is not just for drunken college students. It is a time to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It is a chance to get out and escape from the monotony of your every day life. There are many different options for your break depending on what you like to do and who is going with you.

For Families:

Many more families are taking their family vacations in the spring instead of summer or they are adding an extra vacation for their family during the spring. It is hard for a family of 4 to all coordinate their schedules but usually sports and extracurricular activities take a break in spring as well so families are not missing anything. If you are traveling to the Caribbean, make sure to pay attention to the type of hotel or resort you are staying at to see if they allow spring breakers or not. Your family DOES NOT qualify as spring breakers. If you have older children, you may not care one way or another but as a former college spring breaker, I can attest to the fact that students may not always pay attention to others around them. College students will be drunk and may not always be fully clothed - you've seen the "Gone Wild" series right? Your family should look for and stay at resorts that do not allow spring breakers. Also have your travel agent check that the neighboring hotels are also non-spring breaker hotels. This will assure that your family has a nice, relaxing break void of drunken parties all hours of the day and night.

Another popular end of winter trip is to take a cruise. Cruising is not as popular with college kids as the alcohol is not included as it is at a resort. For the last 3 years my family and I have taken a cruise over our break in the spring. The weather is usually in the 80's-90's during the day with 70's in the evening. There is usually a varied group on our cruise ships from the very young to the very old. The last cruise had over 300 kids on-board. Going during this time almost assures your children to have other children to play with their same age and gender.

For College Students:

If you are a college student in search of a memorable end of winter trip, here are a few different ideas for you:

1. You can head out to an all-inclusive resort. This is probably one of the most popular spring break trips for college students. You and your group board a plane at the closest major airport and head to destinations in the Caribbean with Cancun being one of the most popular. Make sure the hotel that you book with accepts spring breakers. Do not book at any hotel or resort that states NO SPRING BREAKERS on their website. Work with a travel agent to get into the type of hotel or resort that best suites your travel needs. One of the best aspects of the all-inclusive is that all of your food and drinks, including alcohol is included.

2. If you are a small group, you can take a road trip. The advantage of taking a road trip is that you do not have to spend money on expensive plane tickets. You and your friends just pile into the car and drive to California, Florida or Texas for some sun and sand. You can also head out to a number of ski resorts around the country if you prefer snow to sand. Remember that this is a busy travel time and weather can be unpredictable. Leave plenty of time to arrive back in time for classes to begin.

3. You can take a cruise The nice thing about cruises are that there are ports all over the United States you can leave from. You can also choose your length of cruise from 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 nights. If you can get a group from your school or a few schools close to you to all travel together, you may be able to cruise for free as the group travel organizer. The downfall to cruising is that alcohol is not included. Anything that is ordered from the bar gets an automatic 15% gratuity added to it. Some cruise lines have age restrictions, make sure you meet their requirements before booking. Also, make sure that each person in your cabin puts their own credit card down. Do not put your credit card down to cover the entire cabin.
